Supreme Court Limits Presidential Power on Tariffs

Supreme Court Limits Presidential Power on Tariffs.webp

February 21, New Delhi – The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected sweeping tariffs imposed by Donald Trump under a law intended for use during national emergencies, declaring them illegal.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court held that the tariff policies introduced since April under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unconstitutional, formally striking down the global tariffs.

The justices ruled that the president lacked authority under the law to impose import duties on goods from nearly all U.S. trading partners, affirming that the power to levy taxes rests with the U.S. Congress, not the president. On the same day, Trump described the Supreme Court's decision as "a disgrace" to the country.
