
AIZAWL, MARCH 5, 2026: The ICFRE-Bamboo and Rattan Centre (BRC) in Aizawl, began a comprehensive two-day "Green Skills Training – Introduction to Composting and Apiculture" program today, scheduled from March 5 to 6, 2026, under the Van Vigyan Kendra (VVK) Aizawl. The training is attended by 20 enthusiastic participants from the Bethlehem Vengthlang locality of Aizawl. The two-day training will include technical sessions and practical demonstrations designed to equip the trainees with the tools necessary to start their own composting and beekeeping units.
Highlights of the Inaugural Session
The session began with a welcome address by Shri Sandeep Yadav, Scientist-D and Head of ICFRE-BRC. He provided a detailed overview of the Centre's ongoing activities and its commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods through scientific interventions.
Dr. Nitin Kulkarni, Director of ICFRE-Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, who joined the inaugural session via video conferencing, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the ecological synergy between waste management and agriculture.
On Soil Health: He stressed the critical role of vermicomposting in promoting organic farming and maintaining long-term soil fertility.
On Biodiversity: He highlighted the indispensable role of bees as pollinators and the high value of honey within the pharmaceutical industry.
The Chief Guest, Shri JH Lalbiakliana, CEO of the Mizoram Khadi and Village Industries Board (MKVIB), elaborated on the board's extensive work in apiculture training. He noted that:
Scientific Management: Transitioning to scientific beekeeping is essential for maximizing yield and sustainability.
Policy Support: Apiculture is a primary theme under the "Hand Holding Policy," a key component of the Mizoram Government's flagship policies aimed at boosting the local economy.
The Guest of Honor, Pi PC Vanlalpeki, Local Council Member of Bethlehem Vengthlang, encouraged the participants to view these green skills as a gateway to financial independence. She remarked on the growing importance of self-employment opportunities in the modern economy through specialized skill acquisition.
The inaugural program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Shri Subhaprada Behera, Scientist-B, ICFRE-BRC, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
