SVEEP Campaign Promotes Voter Participation.webp

Kolkata, March 27 The Election Commission (EC) conducted a major voter awareness campaign in Howrah on Friday as part of its SVEEP campaign ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections, an official said.

The initiative, held under the theme 'Festival of Elections, Pride of West Bengal', is part of a broader effort across poll-bound states, including Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, to promote informed and enthusiastic participation in the electoral process.

"A major Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) outreach was organised in Howrah today, along with similar programs across all districts of the state, to encourage active participation in a free, fair, and festive environment," an EC official said.

The Howrah event began with a cyclothon from Howrah Bridge check post at 7 am, with participation from students, first-time voters, and officials.

The rally passed through key locations before concluding at Ramkrishnapur Ferry Ghat.

Cultural programs featuring folk songs, dance, and drama followed, highlighting the importance of voting. A voter awareness boat ferry was also launched as part of the campaign.

To engage younger audiences, popular animated characters 'Chhota Bheem' and 'Chutki' participated in the event, spreading awareness among first-time voters.

"The objective is to educate voters about the importance of voting and provide essential information such as locating polling stations and poll schedules," the official said, adding that the drive seeks to maximize turnout, especially among urban voters, women, persons with disabilities, and youth.

The campaign will incorporate West Bengal's cultural heritage, including Kalighat paintings, Pattachitra art, Chhau dance, Jatra theatre, and Baul traditions, to deepen voter engagement.

The elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly will be held in two phases – on April 23 and 29. Votes will be counted on May 4.
