March 5, New Delhi – India defeated England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup by 7 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the final, India will face New Zealand on Sunday.
Sanju Samson's blistering innings of 89 runs off just 42 balls helped India set a target of 254 runs for England. This score is the highest ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match, surpassing the previous record of 205 for 4 held by West Indies vs Australia in 2012 in Colombo.
Samson completed his half-century with a six in the eighth over, which was Liam Dawson's first over. He conceded 19 runs in that over. Curran then bowled the next over, conceding 20 runs. Samson and Kishan set a new record for the highest partnership in a T20 World Cup knockout match. The pair added 97 runs for the second wicket.
Suryakumar Yadav scored 11 runs off six balls before he was dismissed by Adil Rashid. He became the joint-second highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup, alongside Adam Zampa, who has taken 44 wickets in the T20 World Cup. Shalib Al Hasan is at the top with 50 wickets.
Dube and Hardik Pandya added 22 runs for the fifth wicket before Dube was dismissed in a bizarre runout. He scored 43 runs off 24 balls, with the help of four sixes and a four.
Pandya scored 27 runs off 12 balls, and Tilak Varma scored 21 runs off just seven balls, which helped India set the highest total in a T20 World Cup knockout match. In reply, Jacob Bethell lit up the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with a sensational century off 45 balls. Chasing a target of 254, the left-handed batter kept England in the game with his maiden T20I century, also his first in the format.
However, his effort went in vain as England lost by seven runs and were eliminated from the tournament. Bethell scored 105 off 48 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes, but England could only manage 246 for seven after 20 overs.
This is India's sixth 250-plus total in the format. India hit 19 sixes in their innings, which is the joint-most in a T20 World Cup innings.
India holds the record for the most 250-plus scores in Men's T20 Internationals, with impressive totals like 297/6 against Bangladesh, 283/1 against South Africa, and 271/5 against New Zealand.
