T20 World Cup: Samson Leads Strong Nominees for Player of the Tournament.webp

Dubai, March 6 Sanju Samson, the in-form Indian opener, was among the eight-man shortlist for the ICC's T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament award, announced on Friday.

The other nominees are England all-rounder Will Jacks, Pakistani opener Sahibzada Farhan, South African pacer Lungi Ngidi and captain Aiden Markram, New Zealand's all-rounder Rachin Ravindra and batter Tim Seifert, and American bowler Shadley van Schalkwyk.

Samson, who did not play in the early part of the tournament, shone in the T20 World Cup with consecutive Player of the Match performances.

The opener scored 89 off 42 balls against England in the semi-final, helping India win by seven runs on Thursday. Before that, his 97 off 50 balls laid the foundation for the defending champions' five-wicket victory over the West Indies in a virtual quarter-final.

The wicketkeeper-batter has amassed 232 runs at an average of 77.33 and a strike rate of 201.73 in the four matches he has played in the tournament.

Jacks has been instrumental in his team winning six of their eight matches at the T20 World Cup. He has won four Player of the Match awards, and has scored 226 runs and taken nine wickets in eight matches.

Farhan scored 383 runs in six innings, which is the most runs scored in a single edition of a T20 World Cup. He also became the first player to score two centuries in a single edition of the tournament, scoring a hundred each against Sri Lanka and Namibia.

Ngidi, with 12 wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 7.19, proved to be a vital part of South Africa's pace attack and was their most consistent fast bowler.

South Africa captain Markram was central to the Proteas' performance at this T20 World Cup, scoring three half-centuries in eight matches, amassing 286 runs, and also taking a wicket.

New Zealand all-rounder Ravindra has proven valuable for his side with both bat and ball, scoring 128 runs and taking 11 wickets in eight matches.

Although the USA were eliminated after the group stage, van Schalkwyk set the benchmark for bowlers at this T20 World Cup. In just four matches, the American pacer claimed 13 wickets at a respectable economy rate of 6.80.

Seifert has played a major role in New Zealand's run to the T20 World Cup final, scoring 274 runs in eight matches with eight half-centuries.

India will face New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
