Tamil Nadu Assembly Session Concludes Amidst Political Tensions.webp

Chennai, March 13 Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Friday adjourned the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session, which commenced on January 20, 2026.

In a notification issued by Assembly Principal Secretary K Srinivasan on Friday, Arlekar said, "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, hereby prorogue the session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which commenced on January 20, 2026, effective from the date of this notification."

This is the fourth instance of this kind, as former Governor R N Ravi walked out of the State Assembly without delivering his customary address on the inaugural day of the session, after alleging that the national anthem was disrespected. This prompted a sharp response from Chief Minister M K Stalin, who termed his action as an "insult" to the House and the people of the state.

Later, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu presented the interim budget on February 17. The session concluded on February 20.

The state assembly elections are likely to be held in April.
