Tamil Nadu Politics: Vijay's TVK Campaign Faces Hurdles

Tamil Nadu Politics: Vijay's TVK Campaign Faces Hurdles.webp

Chennai, March 15 Actor Vijay's entry into politics, marked by his appearances in films, was met with great anticipation and excitement by his numerous followers. However, the tragic stampede in Karur on September 27, 2025, which claimed the lives of 41 people, brought to the forefront several issues, leading the state government to formulate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for conducting political meetings and rallies.

Nearly five months after the stampede, Vijay, who is under investigation by the CBI regarding the incident, is currently interviewing candidates from the TVK party for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The 51-year-old leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who will be contesting his first election ahead of the April 23 election, has already announced that the election battle will be solely between the TVK and the DMK, and that other parties are of little consequence.

STRENGTHS:

1. Vijay's charisma and established fan base, particularly among young voters, will be crucial in swaying support towards the TVK.

2. The TVK's ideology, which emphasizes social justice, an egalitarian society, and a two-language policy, aligns with the Dravidian sentiments prevalent in Tamil Nadu.

3. He has announced six key promises for women, including six free LPG cylinders and monthly financial assistance.

WEAKNESSES:

1. Vijay is a political novice and has been criticized for delivering political speeches in a manner similar to his film dialogues.

2. He is currently the sole star campaigner for his party.

3. TVK meetings often attract large crowds, which can lead to road accidents and negative publicity.

OPPORTUNITIES:

1. He hopes to capitalize on the opportunity to establish a strong non-Dravidian party as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK in the state.

2. The party is targeting young voters and the tech-savvy community. Voters who are tired of the traditional Dravidian giants, the DMK and the AIADMK, may prefer the TVK.

THREATS:

1. The Karur stampede is a significant setback for the TVK, negatively impacting its electoral prospects.

2. Vijay has chosen to campaign alone.

3. The TVK faces stiff competition from established players, the AIADMK and the DMK, which have strong organizational structures.
