Tamil Nadu Polls: Campaigning Dispute Erupts.webp

Chennai, March 28 TVK chief Vijay will launch his party's election campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu polls from Perambur here on March 30, EC sources said on Saturday.

Vijay had met with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik at the Secretariat earlier in the day to submit a representation seeking the transfer of certain officials, claiming that they were obstructing TVK's election work.

Sources said clear instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to allow campaigning according to the norms at the locations and dates requested by TVK.

TVK sources claim that the party had applied again for a much smaller meeting in Perambur on March 30, with only about 100 participants. Initially, TVK had sought permission for a gathering of 3,000 people.

Regarding other points raised by Vijay, including the transfer of officials, a representation will be made to the Election Commission of India, EC sources added.

In the lead-up to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, a significant political row has erupted over the denial of permission for TVK chief to campaign in the Perambur constituency. TVK had claimed that it had submitted an application two days in advance, on March 26, through the Election Commission's 'Suvidha' portal, to hold campaigning at the Mullai Nagar junction in Perambur on Saturday.

The police and election officials reportedly rejected the application, citing space constraints – that the junction is unsuitable for a gathering of 3,000 people – and ongoing civic work.

However, TVK alleged that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) suddenly dug pits and placed barricades at the site just 24 hours before the event.

Following this, Vijay issued a strong statement on March 27, describing the denial of permission as a "fascist attack on democracy". However, GCC Commissioner and District Election Officer J Kumaragurubaran dismissed the claims as misleading, saying that the denial followed standard operating procedures.

After Vijay's meeting with the CEO, TVK senior leader K A Sengottaiyan told reporters that the party is seeking the transfer of certain officials.

"In West Bengal, numerous officials have been transferred after the model code of conduct for the Assembly elections was notified. But why is there a fear in Tamil Nadu to transfer the officials who have been serving continuously in one place for three to four years," Sengottaiyan said.

Vijay is scheduled to introduce his party's candidates for the 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 30 in Puducherry in the city during a party meet on Sunday. While the Tamil Nadu polls will be held on April 23, elections are slated for Puducherry on April 9.
