Dhaka, February 18 – In his inaugural address to the nation, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman pledged to strengthen the rule of law and ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Rahman, a 60-year-old leader, emphasized the importance of restoring peace and security through effective law and order and strict control over corruption. He stated that his government's priority is to create a society where all citizens, including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, can live in harmony and security, whether they reside in urban or rural areas.
Rahman also highlighted the need for a pluralistic society, emphasizing that the country belongs to everyone, regardless of their religious or ethnic background.
Rahman's remarks come in the context of recent concerns regarding violence and attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus.
The Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF) reported a significant increase in violence and attacks, including 21 incidents of lynching and 28 incidents of mob violence in January 2026.
The organization also documented 522 communal attacks in 2025, including killings, rapes, and vandalism of religious sites, with the deaths of 116 minority individuals, primarily Hindus, between June 2025 and January 2026.
Rahman stated that all institutions, including political parties and government agencies, will operate according to established laws and regulations. He emphasized that the rule of law will be the ultimate guiding principle in governing the country.
Rahman also outlined his party's goal of establishing a self-reliant, secure, humane, and democratic Bangladesh.
In his address, Rahman also extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of understanding the principles of the holy month.
Rahman also reiterated his commitment to addressing the challenges facing Bangladesh, including its large population and its economy.
