Madurai (Tamil Nadu), March 1 Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Arulmigu Subrahmanya Swamy temple at Tirupparankundram near here on Sunday, amidst tight security arrangements.
The Prime Minister, who arrived around 4:15 pm, was given "purna-kumbha" honours by the temple administration.
Dressed in a dhoti, kurta, and wearing a shawl, the Prime Minister toured the temple and later offered his prayers.
Later, on his official social media account, Modi said, "Vetrivel Muruganuku Arogara !!. (A Tamil chant that says victory to the spear (vetrivel) of Lord Muruga)".
"Prayed at the Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple, Thirupparankundram, Madurai," the PM said in his official social media account.
Modi was accompanied by Governor R N Ravi, Union Minister L Murugan, and BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran.
"Sought blessings for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of all. May Lord Muruga always guide us with strength, courage, and wisdom," Modi said and shared some images of his visit to the temple.
Modi's visit to the shrine follows a controversy last year over lighting a lamp on the "deepathoon" (pillar) on the hilltop, which reached the court.
The court ruled in favour of the devotees' right to light the lamp at the "deepathoon."
