
Thane, April 2 One person died and two others were injured after a man fired at them for allegedly teasing a woman, whom he considered as his sister, in Thane city, Maharashtra, on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred at 11:30 am at Bismillah Chawl in the Kailas Nagar area of Mumbra, they said, adding that the shooter was later arrested and a revolver was recovered from him.
"The accused, Jayan Shivanandan Nair, 51, was angry with the deceased and his associates for teasing a woman, whom he considered his sister. He confronted the trio – Abdul Hasan Sheikh, Akbar Abdul Sheikh, and Sameer Ahmed Sheikh – and their heated argument quickly escalated into a fight," said senior inspector Anil Shinde of the Mumbra police station.
Nair pulled out a revolver and fired at the trio, injuring them. He then fled the scene, but was later apprehended, and the revolver used in the crime was recovered from him, he said.
All three injured persons were rushed to Kalsekar Hospital in Mumbra, where Akbar Sheikh succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, the official said.
The body of the deceased was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, Shinde said, adding that the other two are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including murder and attempted murder, along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
"We are further investigating the crime to establish the exact sequence of events and the source of the firearm," the senior official said.
