Kohima, April 2 Senior Congress leader K. Therie resigned from the party on Thursday, alleging a "breach of trust" and unconstitutional interference by the AICC in the affairs of the party's Nagaland unit.
Therie, a former Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president and an ex-state minister, submitted his resignation to the AICC president through the MP in-charge of the state, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka.
He stated that his decision was prompted by the AICC’s "backing out" from the 10-point modalities agreement between the INC and NPCC.
He said the agreement, rooted in the spirit of Article 371A, ensured autonomy for the NPCC in managing the affairs of Nagaland, with the principle that the state unit would be "regional in content and national in outlook."
Raising objections to the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan (organisation reorganisation campaign), Therie claimed it undermined the NPCC's authority.
Despite his earlier objection in a letter dated January 31, 2026, he alleged that the AICC proceeded to appoint district Congress committee (DCC) presidents on March 30, thereby "invalidating" leaders who were still in the middle of their constitutional terms.
Therie also levelled allegations of election funds embezzlement against AICC functionaries in charge of Nagaland, claiming that those found guilty were "protected," while others who resisted were penalised.
There was no immediate response from the AICC at the time of filing this report.
NPCC president and Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir said he was yet to receive Therie's letter.
