Mullanpur, April 9 T20 cricket is dominated by aggressive hitting, but Punjab Kings batter Cooper Connolly is advocating a more measured approach to success, one built on timing, rhythm, and trust.
The 22-year-old Australian made an immediate impact on his IPL debut, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls to guide PBKS to a three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in their opening match.
The innings demonstrated his belief that there are multiple ways to dominate in the shortest format.
"Each player has their own strengths, and I'm focused on playing to my strengths, which have been successful for me so far.
"Obviously, power hitting is becoming a major part of T20 cricket, but there are other ways to succeed, and that's what I'm aiming for," Connolly said during an interview on 'JioStar Press Room'.
Comfortable with his current approach, Connolly believes his tempo-based game allows him to contribute most effectively to the team. At the same time, he is open to adapting.
"I will continue to focus on what has worked for the past five or six years, and gradually adapt from there, adding small elements to the strategy."
When asked about his approach in the IPL, Connolly said he aims to put pressure on the spinners in an attempt to force the captains to bring the fast bowlers back on, which suits him best.
"The pitches, obviously, have been relatively good so far, so I think it's just about putting pressure back on the spinners and really honing their skills, while also bringing the fast bowlers back into the game, because I feel like that's where I can perform best with the fast bowlers.
"So, yeah, I'm just focusing on dominating as much as possible and hitting the ball hard. There's also the challenge of playing against spinners, and sometimes that doesn't work out, so it's about managing that situation effectively."
