March 03, New Delhi - A total lunar eclipse is expected to occur in India, as well as across several time zones today. During this event, the Moon will move from right to left, passing through Earth's shadow.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are precisely aligned, and the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking any direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
In the Indian context, the experience will vary by region. Most places in India will observe the end of the lunar eclipse at the time of moonrise, except for some places in North-East India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where the end of the totality phase of the eclipse will also be visible.
The eclipse is scheduled to begin at 3:20 PM, with the totality phase starting at 4:34 PM.
NASA shared a video post on X and wrote, "The Moon will appear red during a total lunar eclipse on March 3. On the 8th, Venus and Saturn will be close together in the night sky. Plus, March 20 is the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere."
