Toxic Gas Leak Triggers Road Blockade in Jharkhand Mine.webp

Dhanbad (Jharkhand), February 28 Residents in Dhanbad district blocked the Tetulmari-Raiganj Main Road in the Baghmara area on Saturday, according to police, in protest against alleged toxic gas leaks from underground fires in abandoned coal mines.

Vijay Choudhary, the Officer-in-Charge of the Tetulmari Police Station, told

"On Saturday, after the contracting company started working on the mine shafts (sides of the mines), the smoke started billowing, affecting nearby residents who blocked the road in protest," the official said.

He claimed that the road blockade was lifted after BCCL and the contracted unit personnel extinguished the flames and stopped the smoke billowing from the area.

"We have asked BCCL officials to take steps to prevent such incidents of smoke coming out from abandoned coal mines," the police officer added.
