New Delhi, February 23 To alleviate traffic congestion on key arterial roads in east Delhi – Geeta Colony Road, Patparganj Road, and Mother Dairy Road – the Public Works Department (PWD) plans to conduct a feasibility study, officials said on Monday.
In addition, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct a skywalk at the Laxmi Nagar intersection, one of the most congested areas in Delhi.
"To ease traffic on the Geeta Colony road and ensure smooth traffic movement, a feasibility study will be conducted between Mother Dairy and Kashyap Mohalla," a PWD official said.
Recently, as part of an effort to reduce traffic congestion on Vikas Marg, starting from the Laxmi Nagar intersection, all traffic lights were closed and U-turns were created to facilitate vehicle movement.
"The skywalk will help pedestrians cross at the traffic light. We have received the necessary funding for the project, and tenders will soon be floated. The skywalk will be similar to the one constructed on Tilak Marg near ITO, connecting several areas," Abhya Verma, MLA of Laxmi Nagar, said.
The traffic light connects to the Mother Dairy Road, which further connects to the Patparganj area and also to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway towards cities like Ghaziabad and Noida.
"The government will also carry out extensive resurfacing of three roads – Mother Dairy Road, Patparganj Road, and Vikas Marg, along with renovating the sidewalks. This will help reduce congestion on the roads," Verma further said.
Currently, there is a single flyover on Mother Dairy Road towards Mayur Vihar, however, after landing near the Mother Dairy plant, traffic comes to a halt. Additionally, the presence of residential and commercial establishments on both sides of the roads, leading to vehicle parking, causes heavy congestion during peak hours.
"The goal of decongestion is to determine the type of corridor improvement work that can be carried out, including an underpass, flyover, or both. The Geeta Colony road carries heavy traffic," the plan states.
In addition to conducting surveys of buildings and encroachments, consultants will also conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the scheme, taking into account economic, environmental, and social costs associated with its implementation.
