Bokaro, April 7 An accountant with the Jharkhand Police department was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly withdrawing Rs 3.15 crore meant for salary disbursement from a treasury in Bokaro district, officials said.
The accused has been identified as Kaushal Kumar Pandey.
The arrest followed an FIR lodged on Monday by treasury officer Gulab Chand Oraon at Bokaro Steel City police station on the instructions of Bokaro Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nath Jha.
Bokaro DSP Alok Ranjan said, "We arrested the accountant after the FIR was lodged by the treasury officer. After examining records from the treasury and bank account statements, it was found that Rs 3.15 crore had been withdrawn from the salary head."
The amount was withdrawn in the name of sub-inspector Upendra Singh for the financial year 2024-25 (from May 2024 to March 2025) and was transferred by the accountant into other bank accounts, including his wife’s, he said.
Prima facie, it has been found that the withdrawal of funds under the salary head in the name of Upendra Singh does not match the normal procedure, and there is a suspicion of serious irregularities, additional collector Md. Mumtaz Ansari said.
"I have ordered officials to freeze the bank accounts into which the funds were transferred. Documents in the treasury office are being seized," Jha said.
