Chandigarh, February 24 The Punjab Police claimed on Tuesday to have busted a module, backed by the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), with the arrest of two individuals involved in shooting incidents linked to extortion.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that two individuals have been arrested, and a pistol along with magazines and eight cartridges were seized from them.
The accused have been identified as Sukhwinder Singh alias Sunny and Rawal, from Kulam village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused were acting on the directions of foreign-based handlers Gopi Nawashehria, Jassi Kulam, and Sushant Chopra, who are associated with the BKI, Yadav said.
Investigations revealed that the accused allegedly fired twice at the residence of a travel agent in the Garhshankar area to extort money.
The DGP said that both were arrested in an intelligence-led operation from the Jalandhar-Amritsar Highway, near the Lidhran underbridge in Suranussi, Jalandhar.
Further investigations are underway to trace forward and backward linkages and identify other members of this module. More arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days, he added.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
