UN Security Council Reform: India Prioritizes Permanent Membership

UN Security Council Reform: India Prioritizes Permanent Membership.webp

February 21, New Delhi – India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Yojna Patel, delivered a statement at the Intergovernmental Negotiations on UN Security Council reforms, focusing on membership categories.

Ambassador Yojna Patel stated that the Council has failed to fulfill its core responsibilities regarding peace and security. She emphasized that reforms must include the expansion of permanent membership, arguing that without this, the process would be incomplete. Patel rejected proposals introducing a third category, stating that they risk delaying real reform for decades. She also insisted that any restructuring must correct, not exacerbate, existing imbalances.
