Union Minister Reviews Welfare Programs in Meghalaya, Addresses Aadhaar Issues.webp

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar said on Monday that any challenges faced by Meghalaya in linking to Aadhaar or implementing centrally sponsored schemes would be addressed in coordination with the State government to ensure that beneficiaries receive the intended welfare support.

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting in East Khasi Hills, the Union Minister clarified that the Centre formulates schemes for the entire country and implements them uniformly across states. However, if specific geographical or administrative difficulties arise—particularly in states like Meghalaya—efforts are made to resolve them in a time-bound and practical manner.

"Schemes are designed for the whole nation and implemented in all states with uniformity. If any state faces temporary challenges, we work towards resolving them so that beneficiaries receive the same benefits as elsewhere," he said, responding to queries on concerns about linking Aadhaar in certain areas of Meghalaya.

The Minister stated that discussions would be held with concerned departments to address any inconvenience faced by citizens in linking Aadhaar with welfare schemes. He assured that corrective steps would be taken to streamline the process wherever required.

The review meeting covered multiple centrally sponsored schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, and Mission Vatsalya, along with schemes under the School Education Department and Social Welfare initiatives.

Officials from various departments briefed the Minister on the status of implementation in East Khasi Hills district.

During his visit, Kumar toured several institutions, including schools, child care institutions, an old age home, women's welfare centres, and facilities for children. He interacted directly with beneficiaries and staff to assess whether schemes were reaching the grassroots level effectively and to identify any bottlenecks.

"Important points have emerged during these interactions, and they have been noted for further action," he said.

The Minister's visit is part of the Centre’s ongoing outreach to Northeastern states, under which Union Ministers periodically review the progress of centrally sponsored schemes on the ground.

Highlighting the coordination between the Centre and the State, Kumar said the "double-engine government" model—referring to alignment between the Union and State governments—was helping accelerate development initiatives in Meghalaya.

He acknowledged the efforts of the State government under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, noting that in several sectors commendable work was being carried out.

"Wherever additional intervention is required, the State government communicates with the Centre. Together we review and take corrective steps so that Northeastern states progress on par with the rest of the country," he added.

The Minister reiterated the Centre's commitment to ensuring effective implementation of welfare schemes and equitable development across the region.
