Kolkata, March 24 The financially strained Jadavpur University decided to seek financial assistance from the West Bengal government, with its executive council resolving to request additional funds for maintenance, infrastructure, and research needs, varsity officials said on Tuesday.
The move comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating infrastructure across the campus, including hostels and academic buildings.
"Maintenance work in several buildings, including student hostels, has come to a standstill. Most elevators lack operators and have not been serviced," the official said, adding that fears have intensified following the death of a young man due to a malfunctioning elevator at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital recently.
Faced with these challenges, the university's executive council has decided to approach the state government seeking approximately ₹22 crore for urgent repairs, procurement of research equipment, and clearing pending work, the official said.
While approximately ₹27 crore was allocated to the varsity by the state government in February, the institute has received only slightly over ₹20 crore so far.
"As the funds received are insufficient, the EC has requested an additional demand of ₹15 crore. Therefore, we need an additional sum of approximately ₹22 crore to meet the needs for maintenance purposes," the official said.
