University Faces Student Demands Over Admissions.webp

Kolkata, March 24 Members of the Left-leaning Students' Federation of India staged a sit-in at Presidency University here since Monday night, demanding that the institution conduct its own entrance examination for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Currently, the Presidency University Bachelor's Degree Entrance Test (PUBDET) and Presidency University Master's Degree Entrance Test (PUMDET) are conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB).

"The admission process should be based on Presidency University's own entrance tests, and the guidelines in this regard must be published immediately," Ushashree Mitra, a spokesperson for the protesters, said on Tuesday.

The protesting students of the university also demanded immediate elections to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the students' union.

"We want ICC and students' union elections to be conducted without delay in a democratic manner," a protester said.

They also raised concerns over the implementation of the National Education Policy and called for clarity on course structures and bridge courses.

The protesting members of the SFI's Presidency University unit further rejected the existing sports and cultural boards, terming them "undemocratic", and insisted that no committees should be formed without elected student representatives.

"We reject the undemocratic sports and cultural boards. No committee should be constituted at any functional level without elected student representation," Mitra said.

The protesters asserted that the sit-in would continue until their four-point charter of demands is accepted.
