Bareilly (UP), March 13 Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University Vice-Chancellor Prof K P Singh on Friday said he had started using a traditional 'chulha' (stove) at his residence and would not use LPG for the next two months, in the wake of concerns over LPG supply.
He also asserted that there was no shortage of LPG, urging people to shun rumours.
Speaking at a journalists' felicitation programme at the university campus here, Singh urged people not to hoard LPG cylinders amid rumours of LPG shortage, saying households should avoid unnecessary stocking and even consider alternative cooking methods for some time.
"Capable people should not store gas. It is not necessary that food must always be cooked on gas. People who can afford it should light a chulha at home for some time," he said.
"People are getting worried because of rumours. One should not believe such rumours, and it should not become a mindset that the country is facing a gas crisis," Prof Singh said.
The vice-chancellor also assured that university hostels have adequate LPG supply and no student would face difficulty. "There is sufficient gas in the hostels' kitchens and no student will go hungry," he said.
In recent days, several parts of Uttar Pradesh have witnessed a rush at LPG distribution centres following rumours of a possible price hike or shortage, leading to long queues of anxious consumers.
Officials have repeatedly said that there is no disruption in supply and urged people not to panic.
