
Ballia, March 13 A 36-year-old man has been arrested on charges of allegedly raping a married woman in the Bairia area here, police said on Friday.
According to police, efforts are underway to arrest the accused, identified as Pankaj Thakur.
Police said the incident occurred on the evening of March 9 in a village when the 35-year-old woman had gone to a field near her house to relieve herself. Thakur, a resident of the same village, allegedly sexually assaulted her there.
When the woman threatened to report the incident, he allegedly warned that he would call his friends to the spot and have them assault her as well.
Police said the accused visited the woman's house on March 10 and allegedly threatened her father-in-law, warning that he would shoot him if the family approached the police.
Circle Officer (Bairia) Mohammad Faheem Quraishi said a case was registered on Thursday under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
