Srinagar, April 1 A local militant was killed in an overnight encounter in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army said on Wednesday.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Tuesday night in the Arahama area of Gandebal following information about suspicious movement in the region.
"Based on specific intelligence input, a joint search operation was launched by the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the general area of Arahama in Ganderbal, Srinagar," the Chinar Corps, based in Srinagar, said in a post on X.
"During the search, vigilant troops observed suspicious activity. Upon being challenged, the militants opened fire, and the troops retaliated," the Army said.
The cordon was tactically reorganized amidst intermittent firing, the Army said, adding that the troops effectively retaliated with a calibrated response, resulting in the elimination of one militant.
The slain militant has been identified as Rashid Ahmad Mughal, a resident of the Lar area in the Ganderbal district.
The 28-year-old militant was identified by his elder brother at the Police Control Room here.
