In Hyderabad, April 4, Lucknow Super Giants will need to improve their batting as they aim for their first win of the season against a strong Sunrisers Hyderabad in a challenging away IPL match, here on Sunday.
SRH is entering their first home game of the season with confidence after a dominant performance, scoring 226/8 against Kolkata Knight Riders and winning by 65 runs.
Returning to Uppal, where conditions favor strokeplay, presents an additional challenge for LSG.
With momentum on their side and favorable home conditions, SRH is expected to start as favorites, while LSG faces a significant challenge.
Despite making the playoffs in their first two seasons, the Sanjiv Goenka-owned team has struggled recently, finishing seventh in consecutive seasons, and their current campaign hasn't started promisingly.
Their resources are not the problem.
The Justin Langer-coached team boasts a strong batting lineup featuring Australian T20 captain Mitchell Marsh, South African Aiden Markram, captain Rishabh Pant, and explosive Nicholas Pooran.
However, their collapse of 141 in less than 19 overs against Delhi Capitals at their home venue in Ekana exposed key issues.
Tactical adjustments also backfired as LSG shifted Marsh and Markram to the top, promoting Pant.
Pant only managed seven before being dismissed, reigniting the debate about his ideal batting position.
Moving him back to No. 3, where he had success in 2025 with a century, could be a viable option.
Pooran has also been effective in that role, but the West Indies star player might need to focus on the middle overs.
Marsh was the standout player, getting a start before being dismissed for 35 with a deceptive slower ball, further highlighting LSG's difficulty in converting promising starts.
Given their lack of cohesion in batting, it would be wise for LSG to restore the Marsh-Markram opening combination and allow Pant to slot into the middle order.
Their bowling was their biggest strength.
Mohammed Shami delivered a vintage new-ball spell alongside young pacer Prince Yadav, reducing Delhi to 26/4 in the powerplay during their last outing.
However, LSG failed to maintain the pressure in the middle overs, and another tactical decision – leaving out mystery leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi, their leading wicket-taker (14) last season – came under scrutiny.
Given the expected flat Uppal surface, it remains to be seen whether LSG will continue without a frontline wrist-spinner.
SRH, on the other hand, appears to have found their rhythm after a tough opening defeat to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL opener.
Their batting unit clicked in unison against KKR, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma returning to form at the top.
Captain Ishan Kishan, leading in the absence of Pat Cummins, also showed encouraging signs, while Heinrich Klaasen's experience remains central to their middle-order stability, as seen during his composed half-century in Kolkata.
SRH's batting depth also poses a significant concern for LSG.
Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy impressed with his all-round display, picking up crucial wickets with clever variations, while Harsh Dubey provided control with spin.
The pace duo of Jaydev Unadkat and Ehsan Malinga complemented their efforts, sharing five wickets between them as KKR were bowled out for 161 in 16 overs, with SRH's attack dispelling the notion that it is a fragile unit.
