March 21, New Delhi – Donald Trump has criticized NATO allies for not supporting the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran, calling the alliance a "paper tiger" without American backing.
In a social media post on March 20, Trump accused allies of refusing to join efforts to secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, despite complaining about rising oil prices.
"Without the U.S.A., NATO is a paper tiger," Trump said, adding that allies were unwilling to undertake what he described as a "simple military maneuver" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict, which began with U.S.-Israel strikes on February 28, has disrupted global markets, caused thousands of deaths, and displaced millions.
Several countries, including Germany, the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada, have pledged support for ensuring safe passage through the Strait, but only under conditions of de-escalation.
Emmanuel Macron said there was no willingness among European leaders to enter the conflict, stressing diplomacy and international law as priorities.
