April 11, New Delhi – Britain is expected to abandon its proposal to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius following opposition from US President Donald Trump.
According to media reports, legislation to hand over the Indian Ocean archipelago has expired in Parliament, and a new Chagos bill is unlikely to be introduced.
In January, Trump criticised the plan, calling it an act of “total weakness.”
The Chagos Islands are strategically significant as they host the Diego Garcia military base, jointly operated by the United States and the United Kingdom.
