
Unnao (UP), March 23 A female passenger died and at least 37 others were injured after a bus crashed into a barrier and overturned on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, police said.
According to police, the accident occurred near Nasirapur village in the Bangarmau area when the bus, travelling towards Lucknow and carrying about 50 passengers, lost control and crashed into the barrier.
The impact was so severe that the bus's engine detached and fell onto the road, police said, adding that preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have dozed off while driving.
Police said that Taravati, 55, a resident of the Goshainganj area in Lucknow, died on the spot.
The injured were immediately taken to a community health center, from where 14 critically injured individuals were referred to the District Hospital.
The bus was carrying approximately 50 passengers who were returning after attending an event organized by a private company in Delhi.
Upon receiving the information, teams from the police and UPEIDA (Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority) reached the scene and initiated relief and rescue operations, police said.
The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem.
Officials from the local administration visited the hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured passengers.
