In Vetlapalem, Andhra Pradesh, a cracker unit explosion on Saturday resulted in the deaths of 20 people, including nine women, and critically injured 9 others. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu ordered the suspension of four senior district officials and announced an investigation to determine responsibility.

Earlier, Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh and senior officials had reported a death toll of 21. The explosion occurred at 2 pm.

Naidu stated that the incident, which left 20 dead and nine critically injured, was a "painful and unfortunate" event. He said the government was taking the incident very seriously, as 31 victims were involved, most of whom were from vulnerable communities (12 were SCs and nine were women). He announced an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the families of the deceased and assured that the government would cover their medical expenses. He also promised housing for the affected families and support for their children's education.

Naidu explained that the assets of those responsible for violating safety regulations would be seized and distributed to the victims. He stated that the unit was hiring more people when orders were received and that safety precautions were not being taken.

Durgesh described the explosion as the "biggest" in the state. He noted that full details were still emerging.

Naidu explained that the unit had a valid license.

Durgesh stated that the explosion was like an "earthquake" striking the village.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness over the explosion in the firecracker manufacturing unit and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured would receive Rs 50,000.

The intensity of the explosion at Vetlapalem village was so strong that bodies were flung into nearby paddy fields. Rescuers and locals were seen shifting bodies in "barakalu," sheets made of fertiliser bags.

Fire and smoke emanated from the blast site.

Naidu expressed his sadness over the loss of lives at Surya Fireworks. He said that multiple people losing their lives in this accident was sad.
