New Delhi, March 30 Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited the Bhalswa landfill site on Monday to review the progress of ongoing bioremediation efforts, and said that while work has picked up in recent years, more needs to be done.
According to a post on X, the LG's official handle posted that the visit comes in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier flagging the three major garbage dump sites in the city, namely Bhalswa, Ghazipur, and Okhla, as "mountains of garbage" and calling for their removal, following which work began in 2022.
"While significant progress has been made over the past year, much remains to be done," the lieutenant governor said.
He advised officials to explore emerging global technologies in waste management, along with international benchmarks and expert consultation, to speed up the work.
The LG also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to address not only the legacy waste at the landfill sites but also the continuous inflow of fresh waste, the post on X read.
He underscored the need to put preventive measures in place to avoid fire incidents at the dump sites, especially with the onset of summer.
The LG also called for involving resident welfare associations and market trader associations across the city to ensure segregation of waste at source into dry and wet categories to aid bioremediation, the post further read.
