West Bengal Elections: High Court Upholds Election Commission's Actions

West Bengal Elections: High Court Upholds Election Commission's Actions.webp

Kolkata, March 31 The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the transfer of administrative and police service officers by the Election Commission in West Bengal, which is heading for elections.

The Election Commission transferred several officers, including the state's chief secretary, home secretary, and director-general of police, immediately after announcing the schedule for the state assembly elections.

The petitioner claimed that these large-scale transfers would disrupt the functioning of the state's administration and sought to overturn the orders issued by the election panel.

A division bench, presided over by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, dismissed the petition.

The 294-member West Bengal assembly elections will be held in two phases – on April 23 and 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
