Woman Sentenced to 7 Years for Newborn's Death in Kohima.webp

March 26, Kohima: The court of the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Kohima, has sentenced a 28-year-old woman to seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine.

The accused, Roshni Banet, was found guilty on the 23rd of this month for an incident that occurred on May 22, 2022, in which she gave birth in the bathroom of Oking Hospital and then threw the newborn from a second-floor window. The infant was later found in a drainage and succumbed to injuries despite medical efforts.

The court sentenced the accused to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 5,000 rupees. If she fails to pay the fine, she will undergo 6 months of simple imprisonment on March 25th.

While convicting, the court observed that the offense resulted in the death of a completely helpless newborn and reflected a disregard for life.

Although the act appeared to have been committed in a state of distress and the accused is a first-time offender, the seriousness of the offense warranted conviction, it said.
