
Puducherry, March 5 The Puducherry government has announced that women heads in each of the 63,000 families under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category in the Union Territory will receive two months' assistance in a single payment in the coming days.
The amount will be credited to the bank accounts of the women heads of the families, an official release said on Thursday.
Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan has approved the proposal submitted by Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Wednesday, which involves a payment of Rs 5,000 (comprising two months' assistance of Rs 2,500 per month).
The government has been paying Rs 2,500 every month to the women heads in Below Poverty Line (BPL) families through their bank accounts.
In his message, the Lt Governor said, "The well-being of a family depends on the women in the family. These women are not just the decision-makers, but also the guiding force.
"The economic empowerment of women also reflects the growth and development of society. The two-month allowance being disbursed in a single payment (for the months of February and March) will be a significant boost for the self-reliance of women."
