Chamoli, March 5: The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which provides short-term skill training to numerous unemployed youth and enhances the vocational skills of others, has brought commendable changes in the lives of local residents in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
In particular, women have benefited from the scheme by accessing government financial assistance and starting their own businesses.
Today, many women beneficiaries have established self-sustaining enterprises, while others have achieved considerable success and recognition in their communities.
Despite its challenging terrain, Chamoli has emerged as an example of numerous self-sustaining enterprises, many of which are run by women.
Many women, having received training under the scheme, have started their own businesses and are now earning a good income.
This skill development initiative has had a positive impact on their lives.
As of now, more than 200 women in the district have been trained under the scheme.
Under the scheme, women receive training in jute bag manufacturing, sewing, embroidery, handicrafts, and other useful products.
After the training, they start their own businesses through self-help groups (SHGs) or individually.
Jute bags and other products are in high demand in the market. This has not only improved their financial situation but has also boosted their confidence in their families and society.
The training centers also provide them with information on product quality, packaging, and marketing, enabling them to reach a wider market.
A beneficiary, Seema Negi, stated:
"I am now sewing jute bags using a sewing machine and have also learned to make women's suits and ethnic dresses."
She also praised the initiative and the Central government, saying that it has made many women like her self-reliant.
Notably, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme was launched in 2015 to encourage and promote skill development in the country by providing free, short-duration skill training and incentivizing youth through monetary rewards for skill certification.
