Meerut and Lucknow commemorate 168th anniversary of First War of Independence
Lucknow/Meerut, May 10 – Marking the 168th anniversary of the First War of Independence, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday hailed the 1857 uprising as a "people’s revolution" and a symbol of India’s enduring spirit of self-respect and sacrifice.In a post on X, Adityanath paid homage to the brave hearts of 1857, stating, "To free Mother India from British rule, the first freedom struggle was started on this day in the year 1857 by the immortal sons of Mother India. Heartfelt tributes to all the martyrs who participated in this 'People's Revolution', a symbol of India's self-respect, courage, valour, sacrifice, and independent consciousness."
Cultural and Patriotic Events in Meerut
In Meerut, the historic city where the uprising began, a commemorative prabhat pheri was organized with the support of the district administration. The march began at Gandhi Ashram and concluded at Shaheed Smarak, passing through key landmarks like Indira Chowk and Budhana Gate.District Magistrate VK Singh hoisted the national flag at the Shaheed Smarak and visited a dedicated exhibition showcasing the events of the 1857 revolution. He urged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation on social media amid the ongoing tensions with Pakistan and to adhere strictly to official advisories.
Tribute and Community Participation
Earlier in the day, DM VK Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada paid floral tributes at the revered Baba Augharhnath Temple, a site closely associated with the 1857 rebellion.The day also witnessed a cultural programme at Shaheed Smarak featuring student performances, drawing participation from government officials and other dignitaries.
To honour the spirit of sacrifice, a blood donation camp was held at the Meerut Police Line, where 55 individuals including police personnel, health workers, and local residents donated blood.
The events across Lucknow and Meerut served as a poignant reminder of the bravery and unity shown by India’s early freedom fighters, reinforcing their legacy in the country’s collective memory.
