Karachi, April 4 According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking to former captain and the country's highest Test run-scorer, Younis Khan, to take over as head of the domestic cricket department.
A reliable source familiar with the development said PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was keen on having Younis for the important post of Director of Domestic Cricket.
"Khurrum Niazi, who is a career bureaucrat and currently heads the domestic department, has been posted in Islamabad and will be reporting soon for his new assignment. This is why the board is looking at Younis to take over as Director of Domestic Cricket," the source said.
He added that Khurrum, who was brought in on deputation like other bureaucrats into the PCB, had been running the domestic cricket department for over two years.
"Naqvi now wants a proper, experienced cricketer to manage domestic cricket affairs, which remains a source of debate in Pakistan cricket," the source stated.
He said the PCB would only announce Younis' appointment once he signs a contract with the Board. Negotiations are currently underway.
The 48-year-old Younis, who has appeared in 118 Tests and 265 ODIs, is the only Pakistani player to score over 10,000 Test runs, and has also worked in the past as a batting coach for the national side.
However, he left the role after developing differences of opinion with some Board officials.
