In the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe’s bowlers have performed exceptionally well, even if their wicket count doesn’t fully reflect their impact.

Zimbabwe topped Group B, but now aim to finish strongly against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday afternoon after losing their Super Eights matches against the West Indies and India. Pacer Blessing Muzarabani has been their leading wicket-taker, taking 12 wickets, seven of which have come in the powerplay.

Players like Brad Evans, Richard Ngarava, captain Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, and Graeme Cremer have also contributed significantly. “I think, given the variety in our attack, we’ve learned a lot since we arrived here. But with Blessing, Richard, and Brad, who have been excellent for us throughout, the statistics might not fully reflect that.”

“However, in terms of executing the game plans and performing effectively, the players have done very well. Cremer, Raza, and Burl have all contributed at different times. But the potential is very good, and I believe this will give us something to work with and improve in all areas going forward,” said Walsh, the legendary West Indies pacer, in response to a question from IANS during the pre-match press conference.

After a strong performance in the group stages, Zimbabwe’s bowling unit struggled to maintain momentum in the Super Eights. Having conceded scores of 250 or more in successive matches against the West Indies and India, their bowling attack will be hoping for a better performance. Walsh also attributed the performances in the last two games to a significant change in conditions from Sri Lanka to India.

“The conditions here and the wickets were very different from Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, the pitch was slower and more turning, but that wasn’t the case here. It was easier to bat on a flatter track. The ball came onto the bat more, so with a change in execution, we had to be more precise, which we didn’t always manage to achieve.”

“It took us some time to adapt. We didn’t adapt as quickly as we wanted to, and the surface is different. So, obviously, we didn’t stick to our game plan, but I still believe the players did their best.

“Hopefully, we’ll have learned a lot from these conditions. One of the key takeaways is how quickly you need to adapt to different conditions, which is something we’ll take away from this group,” he elaborated.

Walsh believes that Zimbabwe’s performance in this tournament may encourage the cricketing world to view them as a serious contender. “I think the kind of cricket we’ve played has proven that. The players were consistent in Sri Lanka and played some excellent cricket. We wanted to make a statement here, and I think our performance showed that, and we’re happy with the way they played and their success in reaching the Super Eights.”

When asked if Zimbabwe should play more frequently against top nations like India to further improve, Walsh replied in the affirmative. “That would be very beneficial for us, and that’s what we’re aiming for. Playing against strong teams is one of the best ways to improve.

“If we can achieve that and plan these tours, it will also benefit Zimbabwean cricket. It will encourage more young players to play, and it will also provide valuable experience for the current players to improve. We’ve seen the changes since I arrived, and they’re excited to be here and make a statement. If we can put everything together and finish on a high, we’ll be very happy.”

Walsh concluded by expressing his thoughts on the India-West Indies clash in Kolkata, scheduled for Sunday evening. “It’s going to be a very exciting game. I don’t know what the conditions will be like in Kolkata. But I think the team that bowls better will win this game because both teams are very strong with good quality batsmen. So, the team that executes better with the ball will have the best chance of winning.”
