Aizawl, March 26 The women's wing of the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) filed a police complaint against an individual on Thursday for allegedly circulating a "defamatory" social media post targeting a female legislator of the party.
The complaint came amid intensified political campaigning for the upcoming elections to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), scheduled for April 21.
A ZPM leader said that the complaint was filed at the Cyber Crime police station in Aizawl against an individual who allegedly uploaded a "defamatory post" against Baryl Vanneihsangi, the MLA of Aizawl South-III constituency, on Facebook.
According to the complaint, the user posted two pictures of Vanneihsangi in a Facebook group with a caption intended to damage the MLA's reputation on Wednesday.
The ZPM leader said that the party has taken the matter very seriously, viewing the post as an attack on a woman's dignity.
She said that the ZPM demands that the perpetrator be booked and given appropriate legal punishment for "spreading lies".
At 32, Vanneihsangi was the youngest MLA when she was elected to the state legislature in 2023. The TV presenter and radio jockey turned politician rose to prominence when she successfully contested the AMC polls in 2021 on the ZPM ticket.
