New Delhi, Feb 26 – A 15-year-old female leopard named Babli passed away at the National Zoological Park (Delhi Zoo) on Wednesday while receiving treatment for age-related complications and reduced food intake, according to zoo officials.
Babli was brought to the Delhi Zoo from Nandanvan, Chhattisgarh, in 2018. She had surpassed the typical lifespan of wild leopards, which usually ranges between 10 to 12 years. In captivity, leopards can live up to 15-18 years, said NZP Director Sanjeet Kumar.
As part of the standard procedure, a post-mortem examination was conducted, and samples were collected for further analysis at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) to ascertain the exact cause of death.
With Babli’s demise, the Delhi Zoo now houses three leopards—two males and one female.
