18-Year-Old Detainee Found Dead in Police Station at Kalpetta, Kerala

Incident at Kalpetta Police Station, Wayanad

In a tragic incident on Tuesday morning, an 18-year-old detainee named Gokul was found dead inside a toilet at the Kalpetta police station in Kerala's Wayanad district. Gokul, originally from Ambalavayal, had reportedly been detained in connection with a case involving a missing minor girl.

Details Surrounding the Incident

According to police sources, Gokul and a minor girl were taken into custody from Kozhikode by local authorities on Monday evening. The detention followed a complaint regarding the disappearance of the girl. Police had discovered the girl accompanied by Gokul, prompting his detention for further investigation.

The detained minor girl was subsequently shifted to "Sakhi," a state-run shelter for women. Meanwhile, Gokul remained detained overnight at the police station because, due to the late hours, he could not be produced before a magistrate immediately.

A senior police official clarified to reporters, "Gokul was not officially named as an accused in the case. He was detained primarily for obtaining additional information regarding the case, particularly to ascertain if there were any implications under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act."

Discovery and Immediate Response

The incident unfolded when Gokul, upon requesting to use the toilet in the morning, did not return. Alarmed police personnel subsequently broke open the door and found him hanging by his shirt. Despite quickly transferring him to a nearby hospital, medical personnel declared him dead on arrival.

Police have launched an inquiry into the circumstances leading to this incident.
