Chennai, February 27: A group of 27 Indian fishermen, who were previously detained by the Sri Lankan navy for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary, have returned home, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The fishermen, who had set sail from Rameswaram in December last year, were taken into custody by Lankan authorities. The High Commission of India in Colombo facilitated their repatriation following diplomatic efforts.
Upon their arrival in Chennai by air, the Tamil Nadu government arranged transport to help them reach their respective hometowns. The incident again highlights ongoing maritime tensions and the challenges faced by Indian fishermen operating near the international maritime boundary.
