Central Electricity Authority and Tata Power-DDL Recognize the Contributions of Linemen

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in partnership with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL), successfully organized the fifth edition of Lineman Diwas today in New Delhi, celebrating the immense contributions and relentless dedication of linemen and ground maintenance staff, who form the backbone of India's power sector.

The event witnessed participation from over 180 linemen representing more than 45 state and private power distribution, generation, and transmission companies from across India. This gathering provided a crucial platform for frontline workers to exchange experiences, discuss operational challenges, and explore innovative solutions to ensure uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply across the nation.

Minister of Power Highlights Importance of Linemen

In a special video message, Shri Manohar Lal, the Hon’ble Minister of Power & Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, underscored the critical role played by linemen in sustaining India’s power infrastructure.

"Reliable access to electricity is the lifeblood of thriving industries, flourishing businesses, and vibrant communities. Linemen, our unsung heroes, work tirelessly to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, overcoming any challenge—be it weather, disasters, or adversity," the Minister said.

Highlighting the significance of the occasion, he emphasized that Lineman Diwas, celebrated on March 4th, coincides with National Safety Week, further accentuating the essential aspects of safety and the well-being of the frontline workers.

Emphasis on 'Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman'

This year's celebration revolved around the theme 'Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman', signifying the dedication, service, and sacrifice exhibited by the linemen. During the event, Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of Central Electricity Authority, officially launched a special anthem honoring the commitment and sacrifices of linemen.

Prasad particularly emphasized the importance of specialized Hotline Maintenance Training. This training equips linemen with advanced skills needed to safely perform operations on live electrical lines, ensuring both their personal safety and the uninterrupted reliability of India’s power grid.

Recognizing Excellence in Safety Standards

A key highlight of the event was the recognition of four Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) and five individual linemen for their exceptional adherence to safety practices and standards. This acknowledgment was aimed at promoting a safer work environment and inspiring others within the industry.

Mr. Gajanan S. Kale, CEO of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd., lauded the event, stating:

"'Lineman Diwas' not only honors the immense contributions of linemen but also provides a platform to amplify their voices, share their challenges, and recognize their invaluable roles. Ensuring their safety and well-being remains our top priority."

Promoting Safety through Training and Awareness

Dr. Tripta Thakur, Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), delivered a special address emphasizing the critical need for regular training and strict adherence to safety protocols. She praised the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for effectively implementing stringent safety regulations, significantly minimizing workplace accidents and creating a safer environment for frontline workers.

Throughout the event, participants were shown safety videos highlighting best practices, and the celebrations were simultaneously live-streamed to power utilities nationwide, broadening the event’s reach and engagement.

Empowering Linemen through Knowledge Exchange

Participants also visited the Distribution Operations & Safety Excellence Center (DOSEC), which provides specialized training to operation and maintenance staff as per CEA's prescribed curriculum. A comprehensive exhibition showcased state-of-the-art safety equipment and tools, fostering knowledge exchange among the linemen and empowering them to adopt advanced safety measures.
