New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a flagship initiative aimed at accelerating rooftop solar installations across India, has benefitted 8.46 lakh households so far, according to Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Naik revealed that the government has disbursed ₹4,308.66 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to approximately 5.54 lakh residential consumers under the scheme as of January this year.
Touted as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana envisions providing solar power to one crore households by March 2027. The government is aiming to achieve 10 lakh installations by March 2024 and 20 lakh by October 2024, Naik added.
Addressing concerns over zero electricity bills, Naik stated that the extent of savings depends on multiple factors, including the solar capacity of the rooftop plant, the amount of solar power generated, and the household's electricity consumption. As per estimates, around 45% of households benefiting from the scheme are receiving zero electricity bills.
The average financial assistance released per residential consumer under the scheme stands at ₹77,800.
This ambitious initiative is a crucial step towards India's renewable energy goals, promoting self-sufficiency in electricity generation while reducing dependency on conventional power sources.
