AAP, BJP accuse each other of MCC violations in Kalkaji; CM Atishi, Bidhuri's kin booked

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – As Delhi gears up for its assembly elections, tensions in Kalkaji escalated with the filing of three FIRs related to violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), a day before the polls. The FIRs target members of both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AAP’s Atishi Faces Legal Action
The first FIR was filed against Atishi, AAP’s candidate from Kalkaji, and several other AAP members. Police said Atishi was found alongside party supporters allegedly interfering with an officer’s duties at Fateh Singh Marg. Further, two AAP members were booked for assaulting a police constable who was on duty at the location.

BJP Leaders Also in Trouble
The second FIR was registered against two BJP figures, Manish Bidhuri—nephew of BJP's Kalkaji candidate Ramesh Bidhuri—and Ravi Dayama. AAP had lodged a complaint alleging that Manish was seen "roaming around" Kalkaji late Monday night, even though he was not a voter in the area. The police subsequently investigated the complaint and found that the two BJP leaders had violated the MCC. An FIR was filed at the Govindpuri Police Station.

Clash Between AAP Workers and Police
The situation in Kalkaji escalated further when police responded to a report from the Flying Squad Team about a large gathering of AAP workers, along with around 10 vehicles, flouting prohibitory orders. Despite repeated warnings to disperse, the AAP members reportedly refused to comply, continuing to breach the MCC and the prohibitory orders in place.

As the police began videographing the scene, tensions flared, and some AAP workers allegedly assaulted a head constable, snatched his phone, and caused injuries. This prompted the police to file a separate FIR in connection with the assault.

Atishi Slams Election Commission
In the wake of the FIRs, Atishi took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the Election Commission and the police for taking action against her. She accused Ramesh Bidhuri and his family members of engaging in "hooliganism" without facing any consequences, and claimed that the FIR against her was an attempt to undermine her campaign.

In response, Ramesh Bidhuri dismissed Atishi’s allegations, suggesting that she was "panicking" due to her impending defeat. He also remarked that Atishi should refrain from "shredding the dignity" of her constitutional position.

Polling Day Looms
As Delhi’s assembly election approaches, the political drama in Kalkaji adds to the high-stakes atmosphere. With both AAP and BJP accusing each other of electoral misconduct, the situation in the area remains tense.
