Rawalpindi, Feb 26: Pakistan’s interim head coach and national selector, Aaqib Javed, has pointed to injuries to key players Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman as a major setback to the team’s campaign in the Champions Trophy.
Speaking ahead of Pakistan’s final group-stage match against Bangladesh on Thursday, Aaqib emphasized that despite being out of contention for the semi-finals, the squad remains determined to finish on a high note. “There is no concern about a lack of motivation among the players,” he stated.
Addressing criticism over squad selection, Aaqib defended the choices made by the team management, asserting that the best available players were picked. “Except for three changes, this squad is the same that won ODI series in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa before the tournament,” he noted.
He further explained that missing key players like Saim and Fakhar had a significant impact on the team’s performance. “Certain players play a crucial role in shaping the game’s outcome. When they are unavailable, adjustments must be made accordingly,” he said.
Aaqib also pointed out that fans and analysts often conflate T20 and ODI performances, particularly when evaluating matches against India. “Many factors influence a Pakistan-India game. While fans are emotionally affected, the players feel even more disappointment and pain,” he added.
Having taken over as interim head coach following the resignations of Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, Aaqib will conclude his coaching stint after the Bangladesh match. However, he will continue as a member of the selection committee until further notice from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
