New Delhi, May 10 – Marking a significant milestone in green transportation, the Adani Group has launched India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh. The truck, which boasts a 200-kilometre range and a 40-tonne cargo capacity, was flagged off in Raipur by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday.
Adani Pushes for Clean Transport in Mining
Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of the conglomerate, announced the deployment of the hydrogen fuel cell truck as part of its broader initiative to decarbonise its logistics operations. The truck will initially be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to a nearby state-run power plant.“In collaboration with Indian and international energy technology firms and a major automobile manufacturer, Adani is developing hydrogen fuel cell battery-operated trucks. Each unit features smart technology and three hydrogen tanks, enabling the transport of up to 40 tonnes of cargo over 200 kilometres,” the company stated.
State Backs Green Innovation
Lauding the initiative, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said, “The launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck in Chhattisgarh reflects the state’s commitment to sustainability. We are not only meeting the nation’s electricity demands but also setting new standards in eco-friendly industrial practices.”The Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited has appointed Adani Enterprises as the mine developer and operator for the Gare Pelma III block through a competitive bidding process.
Pioneering Sustainable Mining
Vinay Prakash, CEO of Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, emphasized the group’s sustainability vision. “This initiative is part of our commitment to decarbonisation and responsible mining. We are building model mines by integrating technologies like autonomous dozer push systems, solar power, digital innovations, and tree transplanters.”The project is a collaborative effort between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL). ANIL will supply the hydrogen cells, and is also engaged in green hydrogen, wind turbine, solar module, and battery manufacturing.
Environmental and Economic Impact
Hydrogen, the most abundant element, emits only water vapour and warm air, making hydrogen-powered vehicles an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel trucks. These trucks provide similar range and payload capacity with significantly reduced noise and no harmful emissions. The shift from diesel to hydrogen-powered vehicles in mining operations is expected to curb emissions, reduce noise pollution, and help lower India’s dependence on oil imports.
According to Adani, ANR is also the first in Asia to implement Dozer Push Semi-Autonomous Technology, further enhancing safety and environmental standards in mining.
ANR’s portfolio spans coal, metals, minerals, and fuels such as LPG and rock phosphate, underlining its role as a key player in resource management and sustainable industrial growth.
