Mahakumbh Nagar, Feb 3 (PTI) – Amidst the spiritual fervor of Maha Kumbh, scores of sadhus in Prayagraj have undertaken an ancient and rigorous fire ritual known as Panch Dhuni Tapasya, or Agni Snan Sadhana. The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Monday that this intense penance commenced with the Amrit Snan on Basant Panchami, attracting the curiosity and reverence of thousands of devotees.
Taking place in Tapasvi Nagar, the ritual involves ascetics meditating while encircled by multiple rings of fire, enduring the scorching flames as a test of extreme endurance and spiritual discipline. The intense heat, capable of burning human skin instantly, symbolizes purification and unwavering devotion, the government stated.
This rare and demanding sadhana is deeply rooted in the Khalsa tradition of the Vaishnav Akhara. According to Mahant Raghav Das of Shri Digambar Ani Akhara, the practice is primarily observed by the All India Panch Terah Bhai Tyagi Khalsa of Digambar Ani Akhara, a significant sect in the Vaishnav tradition.
The ritual follows a grueling eighteen-year cycle, requiring practitioners to undergo five months of intense fire penance each year. Upon successfully completing this extraordinary spiritual journey, the ascetics attain the revered title of Vairagi, signifying their detachment from worldly life and supreme dedication to spiritual enlightenment.
The Panch Dhuni Tapasya has become a major point of attraction for devotees and scholars alike, offering a glimpse into the unwavering faith and discipline of India's ascetic traditions.
