Ahmedabad Police have arrested a 31-year-old man recently deported from the United States for allegedly using a fake identity and travelling on an Indian passport issued in another person's name.
The accused, identified as Jignesh Patel, a native of Kalol in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district, arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday after being deported from the US via Panama and New Delhi. Patel was apprehended by Ahmedabad's Special Operations Group (SOG) after authorities detected irregularities in his travel documents.
However, authorities found no records indicating Patel's passport had been reported lost. Upon further questioning, Patel admitted that he had impersonated Khalil to travel to Canada. Immigration records confirmed he had departed Delhi on February 3, 2025, aboard an Air Canada flight.
Patel allegedly tried to illegally enter the United States from Canada but was caught and subsequently deported. He now faces charges under Section 319 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating by impersonation, as well as provisions of the Passport Act.
Police are currently conducting further inquiries into the case, and Patel remains in custody pending a comprehensive investigation.
