AI in healthcare likely to contribute $30 bn to India's GDP by 2025: Report

New Delhi, Feb 27 – Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare is expected to contribute USD 25-30 billion to India’s GDP by 2025, significantly improving accessibility, diagnostics, and treatment outcomes, according to a Deloitte report.

The report, titled "Digital Healthcare – Top 10 Myths Debunked Digital Health & AI", highlights that AI adoption in India's healthcare sector has surpassed 40%, outpacing industries like FMCG (30%) and manufacturing (25%). Government initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, are driving responsible AI integration and strengthening data security, setting the stage for a digitally empowered healthcare system.

India’s Growing AI-Driven Healthcare Landscape

Joydeep Ghosh, Deloitte India’s Life Sciences and Healthcare Industry Leader, noted that India’s digital healthcare ecosystem is evolving rapidly. AI-powered diagnostics, MedTech innovations, and digital health records are transforming patient care.

Additionally, India’s surgical consumables and disposables exports hit USD 1.6 billion in FY 2022-23, underscoring the country's expanding footprint in the global healthcare market. However, despite these advancements, AI adoption in healthcare is slower than in banking and financial services, mainly due to concerns over data security, regulatory fragmentation, and inadequate digital infrastructure in rural areas.

Challenges and Road Ahead

The report emphasizes key challenges hindering AI’s full-scale adoption in Indian healthcare, including:

  • Regulatory alignment to streamline AI integration.
  • Workforce training to bridge the gap in AI expertise among medical professionals.
  • Infrastructure limitations in rural areas, which restrict AI-powered healthcare solutions.
While India has emerged as a net exporter of surgical consumables, it still relies on imports for high-tech medical equipment, highlighting the need for a stronger domestic manufacturing base.

To unlock the full potential of AI in healthcare, the report suggests targeted investments, enhanced training, and strategic policy reforms, positioning India as a global leader in AI-driven medical innovations and patient care.
